Storage Island
Disk space at a glance. A Mac utility by TECHNOBASE.
Getting started
Storage Island has no Dock icon or window. After you open it, it appears as a small black island at the top centre of your screen, showing how much space is left.
- Point at the island for a quick summary.
- Click it to open the storage manager.
- The first time, click Choose Disk…, select your startup disk (usually “Macintosh HD”) and click Allow. You only do this once.
Questions
Why does it ask me to choose my disk?
Apps from the Mac App Store can only open what you pick. Choosing your startup disk lets Storage Island measure every folder on it. Nothing leaves your Mac.
Some folders are listed as “Hidden & Protected”. How do I include them?
macOS keeps folders such as the Trash and other apps’ data private. To measure them too, open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access and turn on Storage Island.
Can I undo a deletion?
Yes, when you use Move to Trash: click Undo in the message that appears, or restore the item from the Trash. Anything that deletes permanently asks first and lists exactly what will be removed.
Why can’t it remove some apps or empty the Trash?
Apps installed by an administrator, and the Trash without Full Disk Access, can only be removed from Finder. Storage Island tells you when that is the case.
Why is drive health shown as unavailable?
macOS does not share a drive’s health counters with Mac App Store apps, so only the drive’s name, size and type are shown.
How do I start it at login, or quit it?
Turn on Open at Login in the ⋯ menu of the opened island. To quit, right-click the island and choose Quit Storage Island.
What does it need?
macOS 14 Sonoma or later.
